From EuroVR Knowledge Base
Virtual Reality (VR) technology is still a rapidly evolving and diversifying field. The massive research and development process has reached a degree which makes a pan-European structuring and integrating effort an absolute necessity. In addition, VR technology has started being used to a great extent in industrial applications; this has been processed through an unorganised way, lacking of long-term vision and dealing with case-by-case scenarios. Thus, a critical milestone is to facilitate the adoption of Virtual Environments (VEs) in industrial processes and assess the impact of its "penetration" into the workplace and everyday life in terms of cost-effectiveness, health hazards and side-effects of the users and its impact on the actual working environment, on an individual and organizational level as well.
INTUITION is a Network of Excellence focused on virtual reality and virtual environments applications for future workspaces. It is funded by the European Union, and operates under the 6th Framework of the European Commission (IST). The Network includes 58 partners and it is being coordinated by the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems of the National Technical University of Athens in Greece.
INTUITION 's major objective is to bring together leading experts and key actors across all major areas of VE understanding, development, testing and application in Europe, including industrial representatives, SMEs and key research institutes, universities and major international organisations or associations in order to overcome fragmentation and promote VE establishment within product and process design. Its major objectives include the integration of resources and VR equipment all around Europe, the structuring of European Research Area at VR and the worldwide promotion of Europe as a leading force in this field.
To perform this, a number of activities will be carried out in order for a common view of VE technology, current status, open issues and future trends to be established. These activities will include the integration of human and infrastructure resources, research structuring and also spreading of excellence and dissemination tasks. The quite large consortium is controlled by a firm managerial structure. Strong links with National relevant Networks, current National and EU-funded projects and clustering activities with new initiatives as well, will assist in structuring the VR European Research Area (ERA).
The INTUITION Network aims to:
- Systematically acquire and cluster knowledge on VR concepts, methodologies and guidelines, to provide a thorough picture of the state of the art and provide a reference point for future projects development;
- Perform a review of existing and emerging VR systems and VE applications, and establish a framework of relevant problems and limitations to be overcome;
- Identify user requirements and wishes and also new promising application fields for VR technologies;
- Bring VR researchers closer to industrial requirements by allowing industrial needsto drive future research;
- Structure the European VR/AR area by facilitating an information exchange and collaboration framework amongst the European research and industrial actors.

Internal Projects
Intuition Internal Projects are small projects which help to facilitate to initiate collaborative research activities, might be preparation of workshops, small feasibilty studies, aproviding of resources or preparation of EU-proposals. These projects are approved by INTUITION and the results are fed back to the network.
