Objectives

The goal of ARCO project was to develop innovative technology and expertise to help museums create, manipulate, manage and present cultural objects in virtual exhibitions based on VR and AR technologies and accessible both inside museums and remotely over the Internet.

Main Results

ARCO has developed a solution for museums to create, manipulate, manage, and present cultural objects in multimedia VR and AR exhibitions for use on the web or in interactive kiosk displays. The project put a great emphasis on the interactivity and intuitiveness of the user interface for presenting the cultural information, especially to the younger generation of museum visitors. The ARCO system offers a novel approach to exploring cultural object collections. In addition to exploring a well known Web interface, users can interact with selected objects in virtual and AR environments. The ARCO system enables building interactive learning scenarios in the form of games and quizzes, where users are no longer only passive viewers and readers but they become actors. In particular, interactive presentations can be prepared as educational material customised for children of different age groups for use within a museum or for distance learning. A number of educational games have been implemented, e.g. to arrange objects in correct chronological order, to answer questions about the objects, or re-locate them to a place where they might have originally been used or found. Despite the fact that the project targets the cultural heritage domain, the implemented solution can be used for presenting information and teaching in other domains such as chemistry, geography, biology, etc.
